Submarine Review - Individual Response

Submarine - Individual Response

What are your expectations of the film? Give reasons for your answers.

Before watching the film, I had no idea what to expect. On the cover it has high ratings and states that it is a comedy so I was expecting it to be funny. It is a 15 rating so I assume that there would be strong language used or mature content. The cover doesn't give much away as it just has a picture of the protagonist, Oliver, so it is unclear what the film could be about without reading a description of the film and what it is about.

Narrative Turning Points - at what points does the plot change?

The plot changes when Oliver Tate, the protagonist, doesn't go to the hospital to visit his girlfriends sick mother. As a result to that his girlfriend breaks up with him and he then writes a list of reasons to kill himself.

Memorable moments - what moments in the film stood out to you? Give reasons.

During the film, the moment that stood out to me the most was when he was on a date with his girlfriend as it showed the characters feelings and emotion and gave us as viewers a perspective on what type of character Oliver is and his personality.

Emotional Response - what was your emotional response to the film? Did your emotions change? If so where, why?

My emotional response to the film was mixed. I started of happy at the beginning, then sad in the middle then back to happy by then end, due to the scenes and what went on.

Did you feel empathy/sympathy for any of the characters? Which were your favourites? Why?

I felt sorry for Jordana when Oliver didn't turn up to to the hospital and I also felt sorry for Olivers dad when his mother went out with a guy that she used to be friends with in the past. Furthermore I also felt sorry for the girl at the beginning who gets bullied and falls in a pond and her school work goes everywhere. My favourite character was Jordana because I felt like she was such a relatable character to teenagers of the early 21st Century.
