The Great Gatsby Review - Individual Response

The Great Gatsby - Individual Response

What are your expectations of the film? Give reasons for your answers.

Before watching the film, I had no idea what to expect. The film is based on a book and comes under the Historical Fiction genre so I'm assuming it will be based in the early 20th Century, and from the clothes they are wearing on the front and back cover, they suggest the era. I expect it to be a someone telling the story of one of the characters' life but I don't know anything about the plot.

Narrative Turning Points - at what points does the plot change?

I didn't find any significant parts where I thought the plot changed, only at the end when the character Daisy ran over a woman with a car, but it turned out to be Gatsby's car so everyone thought he had done a hit and run, killing the woman instantly. It is because if that she decides to flee the country with her husband who she doesn't love and her child to prevent her from getting caught.

Memorable moments - what moments in the film stood out to you? Give reasons.

During the film, the moment that stood out to me the most was when The Great Gatsby was shot by the husband of the woman who got hit by his car as he thought that as it was his car that hit her, he was the driver. The bullet went straight through his heart and he fell back into the pool. The husband then put the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger, killing himself. Furthermore, Gatsby was a big name and when he threw a house party, everyone in the city came, but when he was killed, nobody but Nick, the narrator, turned up to Gatsby's funeral, so that also stood out for me.

Emotional Response - what was your emotional response to the film? Did your emotions change? If so where, why?

My emotional response to the film was both happy and sad. I was happy at the beginning when the house party happened and when he was telling parts of Gatsby's life. But at the end I was sad due to the shooting and the neglection from people for not turning up to the funeral. I was both upset and shocked by that.

Did you feel empathy/sympathy for any of the characters? Which were your favourites? Why?

I felt sorry for the character Daisy in the film because she was in love with Gatsby who then disappeared to go to war and she was forced to marry a man who she'd never love. Eventually, she met Gatsby again but in the end she had to flee the country with her husband and never saw Gatsby again. I also felt sorry for Gatsby when he got shot and only one person came to the funeral. My favourite character in the film was Gatsby, not only because he was played by Leonardo DeCaprio, but because he had a messed up life t begin with but managed to work his way up and became rich and successful.
